What Size for the Pump Flanges Should You Choose?
Selecting the correct flange size for your breast pump is crucial for comfort and effective milk expression.
When I first started pumping, I made sure to choose a pump that met all my needs for efficiency, portability, and comfort. I chose Spectra S1. Read more about how to choose the right pump. However, selecting the right flange size was equally important. At first, I used the large flanges that came with my Spectra pump and experienced a lot of pain. My areola was being pulled in, which hurt a lot. Initially, I didn’t even know what flanges were or that you could get customized ones. It wasn’t until my lactation consultant came with a circle ruler, measured my nipples, and recommended a smaller size that I found relief and could pump without pain.
What Are Flanges?
Flanges, also known as breast shields, are the parts of the breast pump that fit over your nipple and areola. They create a seal around your breast and are connected to the pump, which creates the suction necessary to express milk. The flange size refers to the diameter of the tunnel where your nipple goes. Choosing the correct flange size is essential to ensure comfort and effective milk expression.
How to Choose the Right Flange Size
Choosing the right flange size for your breast pump is crucial for comfort and effective milk expression. Here’s a guide to help you determine the correct flange size:
- Measure Your Nipple Diameter:
- Before Pumping: Measure your nipple diameter (not the areola) when it is not swollen from pumping or breastfeeding.
- Use a Circle Ruler: A circle ruler, which has various circle sizes, can be particularly helpful for accurately measuring the diameter of your nipple.
- Use a Ruler or Measuring Tape: Alternatively, measure across the base of the nipple in millimeters.
- Add a Few Millimeters:
- Size Guide: Add 2-4 mm to your nipple measurement to find the appropriate flange size. For example, if your nipple measures 17 mm, you might need a 21 mm flange.
- Manufacturer’s Recommendations: Check the pump manufacturer’s sizing guide, as recommendations may vary.
- Try Different Sizes:
- Comfort and Fit: Sometimes, it might be necessary to try a couple of different sizes to find the most comfortable and effective fit.
- Availability: Many brands offer sizing kits or multiple flange sizes in their pump kits.
Signs You Have the Correct Flange Size
- Comfortable Fit: Pumping should be comfortable, not painful. A correct fit should not cause pinching or rubbing.
- Nipple Movement: Your nipple should move freely in the tunnel of the flange without excessive rubbing against the sides.
- Effective Milk Expression: You should see good milk flow and efficient emptying of the breast.
Signs You Need a Different Flange Size
- Pain or Discomfort: Pain, pinching, or bruising are signs of an incorrect fit.
- Nipple Rubbing: If your nipple is rubbing against the sides of the flange tunnel, the flange might be too small.
- Areola Pulled In: If too much of your areola is being pulled into the tunnel, the flange might be too large.
- Poor Milk Flow: If you are not getting a good milk flow, the flange size might be incorrect.
